How I have overlooked such a convenient form of long-distance communication until now is most assuredly an oversight on my part. But lo! We can script letters not by quill and ink but by pressing nodes on these small devices. Truly a marvel and unexpected given the state of this town. Mayhaps we may have our engineers at the Manufactory look into constructing something similar.
Do let me know if you see this message as I would like assurance that I have sent it successfully. I believe this will be of great use moving forward.
[Estinien has used his phone very little since arriving, and when he has used it, it's been in the form of simply calling people as he might have with a linkpearl. He's half expecting some kind of cryptic nonsense in his inbox when he finally deigns to check. In reality, it turns out to be the opposite of that.
Why... did he name himself after his cat?
He has no idea how Aymeric managed to learn to use these bloody keys so well, but he can't help but be impressed at the length and clarity of the message. He pauses mid-scavenging trip to squint at it for a while - but even so, his first impulse is to only nod to himself and then put his phone away. It's only because Aymeric specifically asked to know if it was received that he contemplates what to send in return. He tries typing something, gets annoyed, and then finally opens the emoji window.]
[Still flabbergasted that Aymeric is willing to fuss with these damned things enough to send such coherent messages, Estinien contemplates trying to explain how he sent an emoji via text message. He doesn't get far before leaving his few words worth of an attempt as a draft and putting his phone away in frustration, deciding to deal with that when he got back to the apartment later.
So, Aymeric won't hear anything back from him until an hour or two later when he arrives on the balcony of the apartment. He pushes his way inside and if Aymeric is there, he'll immediately scoff and say:]
[ Having Estinien go silent is not at all surprising. Having Estinien reappear bells later--through the window, no less--is equally unsurprising, though Aymeric had already moved on from the conversation in his own mind.
He blinks, turning towards the balcony from where he is crouched on the floor. ]
I beg your pardon?
[ Because there may or may not be a cat in there with them, eating from a can of the preserved fish from their stores. ]
[For Estinien's part, he's been thinking about it the whole time he's been out. Thinking about how absurd the phones are in the first place, and how typical (but insane) it is that Aymeric bothered to send him a full letter with its frankly agonizing controls.
Unfortunately, he is not so razor-focused on the concept that the cat escapes his notice. Estinien pauses mid-step, and then grimaces.]
More importantly... what has compelled you to give one of those little beasts a share of our rations?
Yes. Aymeric does have the wherewithal to look a little guilty, like a child who has been caught rummaging through the cupboards between meals. He clears his throat as he turns his attention to the cat who is joyfully licking the can clean. ]
You have seen them around the town of late, have you not?
[ Strays--supposedly ones that belonged to the shrine. ]
I have had little luck in garnering their trust enough to ferry them properly to their home...
[ Until now. It's impossible to look at a happy cat and not smile fondly. But no matter how much he has the urge to reach out and pet the cat, he witholds. ]
[Estinien makes an irritated sound and then slides the balcony door closed behind him. He's inclined to complain about this, but he knows it won't make much difference. The fish is already gone. Fish that one of them could have eaten.]
If the Farm Spirit is to keep so many pets, she can damn well feed them herself.
[He exhales in resignation, crossing over to the cupboards and looking for something to snack on. It only seems fair.]
[ He did not imagine Estinien would be glad to see a cat in their midst, though admittedly he had hoped to accomplish what he needed before Estinien found out at all. Disingenuous, perhaps, but Aymeric had not thought there was much harm in one can going to a hungry animal.
Aymeric bows his head in acknowledgment, a little too taken with his success to feel too bad over it all. ]
There are dried shrimp biscuits on the top shelf.
[ Yes he did pick those up specifically for Estinien. ]
[Estinien pauses at that, and then grunts in acknowledgement as he shifts his attention to the top shelf. He leans on the counter, pulling it open as he watches Aymeric and the cat.]
[ Aymeric raises his brows and his gaze to find Estinien holding his own phone. Of course! ]
Fascinating inventions, are they not?
[ He moves to stand as well, the cat currently entirely preoccupied with its dinner. He takes out his own phone and regards it with no small amount of wonder. ]
I could have, but the thought of being able to pen a letter not only without ink and quill but to have it sent without a veritable courier? I could not pass up the opportunity to experiment.
[ Aymeric raises his brows, amused as he looks back towards his friend. There's a notable lift in his tone when he follows up with, ]
I shall take care in reminding you of that ere our return.
[ And he slips the device away once again. ]
I fully admit it has taken some practice and I am by no means a master yet, but I would be glad to offer my assistance should you wish to learn. It may prove useful should we want to keep our correspondences confidential.

Dear Estinien,
This is Aymeric.

A receipt...and much sooner than he has at any attempt at written correspondence! This is marvelous. This is absolutely Aymeric's new favorite thing!
But... ]
Dear Estinien,
How did you create that picture? It is magnificent!
Sincerely,

[As if he consistently used the one he did have.]
They might have more use if they were less of a burden to transcript messages onto. Far longer than a quill, at any rate.
[He crosses his arms.]
Though that time may be made up by the swiftness of the delivery, my worn patience is not.
